Premier Partner Profiles: Claiborne Hauling and Wackenhut

CLAIBORNE HAULING CONTRACTORS, L.L.C.

Claiborne Hauling Contractors, L.L.C. cut off potential headaches at the pass, before the pass was cut off.

“We opened our full-service west Knoxville terminal in March because of the massive SmartFIX40 construction project,” says Claiborne Hauling Executive Chris Etters. “We didn’t know if we’d run into non-stop traffic jams on the east side of town so we set up a separate office on the other side.”

Claiborne’s main headquarters is located on eight acres on Rutledge Pike in northeast Knoxville. The company offers dump truck services and all types of aggregate delivery. Such rock is typically used for new construction; drain fields, driveways, parking lots and road building. Claiborne also offers trucks that haul in or out by the hour and has fill dirt and screened topsoil. The company’s roll-off container division, consisting of ten-yard containers, 20-yard containers, and 30-yard containers are available to remove construction debris and brush. These services are available to meet any commercial or residential hauling need.

The additional terminal has offered greater access for the company and its clients, and it has proven to be a successful investment.

“We actually outsmarted ourselves because we are now saving large quantities of diesel fuel since we park a portion of our fleet at our west terminal location each night,” Etters says. “Some of our drivers now clock in at our west location, which keeps us from having to drive empty trucks from the east side of town to the west side of town. We now have the ability to dispatch supplies and trucks out of both locations.”

Claiborne is not only saving costs for itself, it will soon save costs for those in the industry by developing 18 additional acres adjacent to its headquarters. Additional services, currently under development, will be offered to clients in the near future.

For the past year, Claiborne has acquired resale properties it believes are perfect for companies needing additional space for business. The company’s grading and excavating division has cleared and made area locations site-ready. This will promote new growth for commercial properties. In addition, the grading division has completed site preparation for Knoxville Wholesale Furniture’s new 100,000 square foot facility located at Old Callahan Drive. The company also recently made property adjacent to the Knoxville Expo Center pad-ready for new development.

“Our guys hauled over 20,000 dump-truck loads of fill material to the site over a six-month period,” Etters said.

Etters says good fortune has afforded Claiborne the ability to take on newer projects such as these commercial developments. Recently, the company has doubled its semi tractor-trailer fleet division, Claiborne Heavy Hauling, LLC. The heavy hauling division has increased from 12 to 29 units in the past year.

“People continue to ask us: ‘How do you do it?’” says Etters. “Well, the Lord has blessed us and the bank is proud of us. In addition, we try to say what we do and do what we say. All of this allows us to be a one-stop shop for the products we provide in this industry. We do that with service and availability that is unrivaled.”

Claiborne Hauling Contractors also offers all types of landscaping supplies including decorative rock, pea-gravel, river stone, mulch, decorative sand, screened topsoil, and custom topsoil blends, compost and mushroom blends, and compactable fill dirt. Claiborne also offers complete excavation services that include residential, commercial, and industrial site preparation. The company constructs driveways, subdivisions, commercial and industrial sites, site utilities, house-seats, drain fields, and offers full dig and pour footer service. Lowboy tractor-trailers and trucks with tilt top trailers are available. Claiborne can handle any size load from mini-excavators and skid-steers, to “super loads” grossing over 150,000 pounds.
